our news INSIDER GUIDE TO CRAFTING AND DELIVERING THE PERFECT RADIO AD
EXPERT ADVICE FROM OUR TEAM SPECIALISTS
Radio advertising is one of the purest forms of storytelling. With no visuals to fall back on, every second has to work hard: painting a picture, setting a tone, and delivering a message that sticks. In entertainment marketing, a well-executed radio ad isn’t just heard; it’s felt. It builds anticipation, creates urgency, and moves people to take action.
At DMS, we’ve spent years perfecting this process, producing high-impact radio spots for film, theatre, live events, and beyond. So, in celebration of World Radio Day, we asked our in-house radio experts—from Creative and Localisation to Audio and Clearance & Trafficking—what exactly goes into making a great radio ad?
Unsurprisingly, a lot.
Here are our best practices for producing and delivering standout radio ads.
1. CONCEPT & SCRIPTING: The Blueprint of a Great Ad
At the heart of every unforgettable radio ad is a strong concept. Whether you’re promoting an upcoming theatre production, a new film release, or a music festival, the key is to craft a message that connects instantly with your audience.
How to craft the perfect script?
- Hook your audience within the first five seconds. Whether it’s an intriguing line of dialogue, an unexpected sound effect, or a question that demands attention, your opening moment sets the stage. In theatre, this would be your “cold open,” pulling the audience in before they have time to disengage.
- Speak to one person. Imagine you’re having a one-on-one chat. That’s how radio works: it’s intimate. When working on any script, your goal is to make your listener feel like you’re talking just to them.
- Use language that paints a picture. Without visuals, your words need to create atmosphere and convey an emotion. A suspenseful pause can add tension to a thriller promo; a clever play on words will bring in a comedic element. Our copywriters’ motto is that every word should add to the experience.
- Think of it like a scene, not a sales pitch! A well-written ad should feel like part of the entertainment itself, not an interruption. The best scripts create mini-moments, short stories that intrigue, excite, or even make the listener laugh. Like any good story, it needs to set up a scenario, introduce a problem, and end with a solution: your experience!
- Call to Action is king. What do you want your listener to do? Visit a website? Buy tickets? Follow a hashtag? Spell it out and make it easy.
2. VOICE CASTING & DIRECTING: Why the Right Talent Changes Everything
Think about the trailers that stick with you… whether it’s that legendary deep-voiced narrator or the cool, casual delivery that feels like a personal recommendation. The voice in your radio ad is its personality. These are the top tips we swear by when it comes to voice casting and directing:
- Cast the right voice talent. The voice you choose should feel like the perfect fit for your brand, your audience, and the story you’re telling. A voice can be warm and inviting, authoritative and powerful, or quirky and unexpected. What matters is that it resonates with the listener and feels authentic, so it’s crucial to pick the talent wisely.
- Authenticity is key. Forced enthusiasm or robotic reads are an instant turnoff. A great voiceover should sound like someone who actually believes what they’re saying— at DMS our Creative Director and Creative Producers are trained to guide seasoned VO artists and actors to find the sweet spot, whether it’s bringing dramatic weight or landing a natural, conversational tone.
- Pacing and energy matter. The same script can sound completely different depending on delivery. Need to hype up a music festival? Go for fast, high-energy pacing. Promoting a serious drama? Let the voice linger, adding weight to each word.
- Professional recording makes all the difference. Even the best voice talent can sound flat if the recording isn’t top quality. A clean, expertly recorded voiceover ensures every word is crisp, warm, and engaging—sounding flawless on any platform. At DMS we are fortunate to have an in-house VO recording studio, so our team can organise and complete recordings swiftly, only steps away!
3. MIXING & MASTERING: The Art of Sound Design
If scripting is the blueprint and voiceover is the lead actor, then sound design is the cinematography—shaping mood, tone, and impact.
A great radio ad is a seamless blend of elements. That’s where professional mixing and mastering come in:
- Balance is everything. The voice should always be clear and front-and-centre. Music and sound effects should enhance (not overpower) the message. Ever heard a film score drown out the dialogue? That’s what our audio team avoids.
- Music creates emotion. The right soundtrack instantly sets the tone. A soft piano bed for a reflective theatre piece, a heart-pounding beat for an action-packed film trailer… music transforms the feel of your ad. We are lucky to often work with movie soundtracks and musical theatre scores, which lay the foundation for powerful audio piece.
- Sound effects build atmosphere. A well-placed SFX, like the engine of a car starting or the roaring sound of a standing ovation, can transport a listener into the world of the story or live experience in an instant. Make a clever use of sound effects to build pace and punctuate key moments.
- Clarity across all platforms. A radio ad needs to sound great everywhere, from car speakers to smart devices. That’s where professional mastering comes in, ensuring your ad is crisp, clear, and engaging in any environment. At DMS we have in-house mixing studio, where our audio operators make the quality of the sound bullet proof for every ad we deliver globally.
4. CLEARANCE & TRAFFICKING: Getting your Ad on Air, Fast and Hassle-free.
A great ad is useless if it doesn’t get on air, on time. The final (but crucial) step in the process is clearance and trafficking—making sure your ad reaches the right stations, in the right format, and meets all regulatory requirements.
- Regulatory compliance: Radio and streaming platforms have specific rules about what can and can’t be said. So even when you think your radio script is final, you need to allow time and resource for script approvals and revisions. That’s where having a dedicated Clearance and Trafficking team, like we do at DMS, can help you sail through approvals without delays.
- Different countries have different clearance bodies. It’s important to know the regional difference when it comes to clearance processes. For instance, in the UK, scripts go through Radiocentre to ensure they meet the BCAP Code for broadcast advertising. In Ireland, clearance is handled by the RTE Clearance Team. If you want to avoid headaches, you may want to delegate clearance to a production agency like ours, who can liaise directly with clearance bodies.
- Tech specs matter: Different stations have different formatting requirements. At DMS we take care of the nitty-gritty, so our clients don’t have to!
- Timely delivery is everything: a missed deadline is a missed airtime, so know your trafficking timelines inside out. Stations prefer to receive copy three working days before the first airdate, but when things get down to the wire (which they often do in entertainment), we can deliver and instruct copy as late as 11 AM the previous working day for next-day playout. However, the best way to avoid the last-minute rush, is by securing early clearance and prepping instructions in advance. That’s how we ensure that ads go live as soon as we receive the final approved file.
5. BRINGING IT ALL TOGETHER: Choosing an Expert Partner
In a nutshell, the best radio ads don’t happen by chance—they’re the result of expert storytelling, skilled voice direction, seamless sound design, and precise delivery.
For entertainment brands, where timing, tone, and impact are everything, the key is finding a partner who understands the industry inside out; one that can bring all these elements together effortlessly to save you time and handovers.
At DMS, we live and breathe entertainment. With a team of creative specialists, production experts, and 24/7 audio and technical operators, we handle the entire process of radio origination and delivery end to end: from script creation to VO recording, producing, mixing, localisation, clearance and trafficking… all under one roof—so your campaign isn’t just crafted to the highest standard, but also delivered on time and hassle-free, every time.
We also believe that technical expertise doesn’t need to come with a high price tag. We keeo our rates competitive thanks to our in-house infraestructure and resources, so that we don’t need to relay on external providers.
